October Customer of the Month Danielle

Tell me about yourself and your family. My name is Danielle. I’m a graphic designer and I love all things creative.  I am definitely a jack of all trades. I have an older brother and sister and, being the youngest, I got the best of both worlds. I feel like it made me very well rounded. My parents are great and now that I am an adult, I see them as friends as well. I have a great boyfriend and we have been together for 3 years.
How long have you been using Alegna Soap products? What product is your favorite? I have been using Alegna Soap products for about 2 years. My favorite would have to be my first love, Lavender Lemongrass.

What do you like to do in your spare time? I enjoy hiking, bike riding, gardening, drawing, designing, cooking, jewelry making. Basically, I enjoy being outdoors and doing anything creative.

Do you have any pets?  I love animals! I wish I could have more pets but right now I have three. A pug named Daisy, a Chihuahua mix named Trixie and a cat named Zoe, all rescues.

What is your favorite movie?  Movie star? What was the last movie you saw? My favorite movie is Ever After.  I enjoy watching movies with Christian Bale. The last movie I saw was Despicable Me 2.
What was the last book you read? I’m not a book person. I liked reading more when I was younger but it got ruined for me in high school and college where I had to read so many books and then analyze every little detail. It took all of the joy out of it for me and I never got back into it.

What would you do if you knew you couldn’t fail? I have a design company I started with my close friend a few years ago. We work primarily in wedding and special event invitations, but I would expand the company to an all round design firm. I really enjoy working with new people and getting to know them and their styles and then translating that into a design that works for them. I would love to have my own storefront and do that full time if I knew I couldn’t fail.
Describe your perfect day. My perfect day would be spent outside with my boyfriend and my dogs hanging out at a park or hiking.

Mountains or seashore? Mountains, but I do enjoy going to the beach in the evening just for a walk.
Tea or Coffee? Coffee

Are you a morning or a night person? As much as I hate getting up in the morning, as long as I get my coffee, I love getting up early so I have the whole day ahead of me.
Favorite color? Yellow because it is so bright and cheerful.

Favorite food? Ice cream!

Favorite season? Summer – I love the warm weather and long days.
What inspires you? I get inspired by nature and by the work of others. I love going to craft fairs and perusing Etsy to see the creative things people come up with.

Thanks Danielle! I'm sure you are enjoying the Lavender Lemongrass soap I sent your way!
Yours in Gratitude,
Angela

Designing labels - Digho

So many people comment on how much they like my product labels. I believe you should do what you do best, and hire someone to do the rest. Designing isn't one of my strong points.  I was happy to pass that on to Diane and Maria of Digho, because designing is definitely one of theirs. When I first started making soaps,  Digho designed my logo and my labels.  When I decided my Sugar Scrubs needed a new look, I took a trip to visit them.

Diane is explaining my options for a waterproof label. I wanted to keep the same look of the vellum strip and they had some great ideas.

Deciding how long the new label should be.

Maria thinks if we make the label a little shorter I will have an easier time attaching it to the jar.

These two women are each incredibly talented in their own right.  Put them together and what a dynamo team! I know their design work have taken the look of my soaps and products up a notch. Pictures of the new scrub labels will follow shortly!

Yours in Gratitude,
Angela

Lemon Poppy Seed Soap, or Danny's Soap

Danny's Lemon Poppy Seed Soap

I always listen when my customers make suggestions of different soaps they would like me to make. The other day, I was chatting with Danny, my May Customer of the Month.  Danny suggested a Lemon Poppy Seed soap.  I thought it was a great idea.  The only problem is that lemon essential oil is a top note.  Top notes are the first scent you smell when you sniff something.  They usually don't last long. I played around with some other lemon oils and came up with a blend of California Lemon, May Chang and Lemongrass that smells very lemony and seems to hold up well in the soap. I think it looks as beautiful as it smells and I can't wait to try it.

If you have an idea for a soap that you'd like me to make, leave a comment below. I would love to hear your ideas.

Angela

Gratitude List 8.12.13

This week my gratitude list has a theme. A few months ago, my husband found out the company he was working for was moving across the country at the end of the year. We had a choice to make, relocate with the job or stay on Long Island and try to find work here. We choose to stay.  Brian was able to find a job, but at a pay cut. He starts his new job today. Here is my gratitude list.

My husband Brian, hopefully he will have lots more time for things like this!

1. Brian has found a job that he believes he will enjoy
2. We are able to remain where we are, geographically close to both of our families
3. I will be able to dazzle my husband with my money saving skills
4. We will be eating healthier since we will be cooking and not be going out to eat that often
5. This job has less pressure and Brian will have more time to slow down and do some things he enjoys...like spend more time with me!

Meet Larain, my August Customer of the Month. Please check out her website. Her office is in Bethpage.

Tell me about yourself, your family and what you do for a living.
I’m a family chiropractor in Bethpage.  I work with both children and adults and especially love working with pregnant women (I’m certified).  I started my own practice 4 years ago.
How long have you been using Alegna Soap products? What product is your favorite?
I’ve been using Alegna Soap for more than 2 years now.  I met Angela then and she was so passionate about her soaps.  I ordered them as favors for my sister’s baby shower and give them away as gifts, of course in addition to using them exclusively.  My favorite is the Peppermint scrub because I love how it exfoliates.  I also love to try limited editions, my current favorite is the one with Anise.

I LOVE spending time with my 9 month old nephew.  Watching him grow is very special to me.  I also enjoy practicing Vinyasa yoga, reading, and spending time with family and friends.  I’ve recently started traveling, which is something I’ve always wanted to do.  This summer I’m going on a tour with a friend to Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.  I’m very excited.

Soap making class

I've taught soap making for a while now, but always in really small groups.  Like one-on-one, and in my own home. This past Saturday on the Upper West Side of Manhattan was my first time with a large class and an outside location. What a great group of women to start with!

Measuring the lye

Adding the lye to the water

Adding the lye water to the oils

Mixing and adding some ground oatmeal to the soap

Class picture
Maureen Harris of Heaven Scent Beauty was my assistant and she kept me on tract. It was so much fun I could have easily lost track of time. I can't wait till next time!

Angela

Gratitude List 7.15.13

When I started putting together my blessing list on Thursday I had a collection of some pretty usual things. My back garden, breakfast with some old high school friends and celebrating 33 years of marriage with my husband. Then Friday came, and my dad needed emergency surgery.  My list suddenly changed.

1. The ER doctor who quickly diagnosed my dad and got him into the OR stat
2. The surgeon, who successfully did my dad's surgery
3. The nurses who took care of him all through his stay so far and the nursing care he continues to receive in the ICU
4. My dad's strength and courage to heal as quickly as he can
5. My dad's sense of humor, which is still apparent despite his recovery pain

What a difference a day can make.

Rose Patchouli Soap

Geranium Rose Patchouli Soap with Rose Clay

My friend Charna of Providence Perfume makes the most amazing natural perfumes. I love them all. In the winter, when I like a heavier scent, I am partial to Rose Boheme. The website description of this perfume says "A decidedly bohemian rose scent created with rich aged patchouli, fir, red tea, rare white rose essence, agarwood, saffron, turkish rose and artisan rose petal infusion."  It won the Best Natural Perfume award in 2012.  I wanted to make a soap that would work with the perfume. I blended Geranium Rose and Patchouli essential oils and added some pink clay for color.  I didn't get fancy with this soap, no layers, swirls or embeds.  I was focused on the scent alone. My result is nowhere near Charna's masterpiece, but it smells great and I like to wash with it before wearing Rose Boheme.

Yours in Gratitude,
Angela

4. An impromptu visit from Melissa on Saturday! I don't get to see my soaping friends enough
5. Air conditioning

Suppliers I love

I've been making soap for 15 years now, and I've seen some good and bad suppliers. These are the ones I love.

Lavender essential oil from Lebermuth and Beeswax from Jedwards

When I first started making soap, my favorite two places to buy supplies were Brambleberry and Wholesale Supplies Plus. They had pretty much everything I needed in one place.  Once I started selling my soaps, I purchased my oils and butters from Jedwards and my essential oils from Lebermuth since it's more cost effective. Lately, I've been getting my lye from Essential Depot.  I've also used The Lye Guy and Red Crown.  Owosso Graphics made my soap stamp and they have a great customer service for those of us who need help figuring out the ordering process. Digho designed my logo and prints my labels. Diane and Maria are two of the hardest working ladies I've met. I've also worked with them on labels for shower favors and private label customers.

Are there any suppliers you like that I've forgotten? Feel free to add them.

Yours in Gratitude,

Gratitude List 6.24.13

I find keeping a gratitude list during the week helps keep me focused on the good things in my life.

Gianna's picture

1. Working a school calendar, I now have off during the day for the summer
2. Having a part time evening job lined up for July and August
3. Only having to spend one day at jury duty
4. The little girl next door, who drew me this awesome picture
5. Marie Forleo and Marie TV. So much fun to watch and learn, I'm so grateful I found her!

What are you grateful for this week?

Yours in Gratitude,
Angela
